If you are like me, you spend a good amount of your day in front of the computer. Then after concluding your day at the office, you spend additional time on your cell phone doing more activities like banking, scrolling through Facebook or checking e-mails.
Have you have wondered how looking at your computer screen or other electronic devices for long periods of time was affecting your health?
I did. So I went to the internet and started doing some research. I came across a very interesting and inspiring person name James Swanwick who was discussing his brand of blue light blocking glasses called Swannies.
James was describing how sitting in front of the computer for long periods of time was bad for us due to something called blue light. It turns out that blue light effects the production of a hormone called melatonin.
When I learned what he was discussing, then it was easy for me to piece together why the quality of my sleep hadn’t been good for quite some time.
I work as a marketing manager for a chain of health food stores, and I am very familiar with melatonin as it is a supplement that we sell.
What does melatonin do?
As the day turns to night, natural light fades. As the light fades, our bodies then produce the hormone melatonin.
Melatonin is what helps us get tired and ultimately fall asleep.
What I didn’t know was that computer screens, handheld devices and LED lights, slow the body’s production of melatonin.
So when I was on my computer in the evening, and there wasn’t any natural light, my body’s ability to produce melatonin was being negatively affected. The result was that it was hard to “turn my brain off” and get a good night’s sleep.
We all know that getting a solid 8 hours of quality sleep per night is paramount for optimal health.
James wasn’t suggesting that people take melatonin pills at night to go to sleep, he was discussing special glasses that block blue light.
In order for you to continue producing melatonin naturally as the sun fades in the evening, you can wear blue light blocking glasses when you are on the computer or when you are surrounded by lighting that is LED.
This made a lot of sense to me. So I purchased Jameses brand of blue blocking glasses called Swannies.
When they arrived I wore them that night when I was on the computer and then when I was watching TV.
That first night after wearing them I had one of the best night sleeps in a very long time. I was surprised that they had worked so fast!
I have continued to wear them every evening for a month now and the results have been amazing.
In addition to them helping with sleep, they are quite stylish.
In the evening I have worn them out to functions and many people have commented on how great they look and want to know what they are all about.
In fact this past Friday I was at a BBQ and one of my friends who is an HR professional “borrowed” them and wore them most of the evening. He repeatedly told me how much they “calmed everything down” and how he “felt relaxed”.
After the night concluded, my friend asked me to send him some more information on the blue blocking glasses and how he could get a pair. Which I did.
That evening is what inspired me to write this post. I’m hoping it inspires you to get a pair for yourself as they really are amazing. I am finding that my sleep is sound and that my productivity at work has increased. I’m less tired in the afternoon and I have lots of energy when I go to the gym after work.
If you are having difficulty sleeping at night due to evening computer work or using your handheld device in dark rooms, I highly recommend that you get yourself a pair of the Swannies. They can be purchased online via Amazon.
In addition to getting deeper sleeps and being well rested there are other really compelling reasons you want to keep your natural melatonin levels up.
Below are examples of negative health consequences of subpar sleep.
- Hearth disease
- High blood pressure
- Lowered libido
- Poor work performance
- Poor skin quality (bags under the eyes)
- Weight gain
- Impaired judgement (driving)
Producing natural melatonin is not only important for quality sleep it plays other critical health roles.
Some of them include:
- Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
- Combats inflammation
- Decreases Negative Menopause Symptoms
- Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Relief
- Eases Jet Lag
- Strengthens the immune system
- Migraine Prevention
